2017 OBC Touring Program Season Recap
The 2017 OBC Touring Program is soon coming to an end, and it is time for a few reflections on the past season and a look to next year.
This was my first season as the OBC Touring Program Director. I kind of stumbled into the role, as I was initially a director without portfolio, but André Gauthier asked me to help with the Touring Program, as he was wearing that hat as well as being the club vice-president.
Running the touring program was made easier as André had done an excellent job digitizing the maps, and setting up a calendar on the website. He helped me get oriented this year.
The initial weather was on and off early in the season, and some rides as well as group riding clinics had to be cancelled. The weather got better during the summer, keeping cancellations to a minimum, but it was still difficult, as the forecasts were very variable. I had to check three websites before making a call to cancel a ride, and tried to hold off deciding as late as possible. Hopefully next year’s weather will be more predictable!
I really appreciated the great work of our ride leaders, and GRC instructors. They are the ones that make it possible to run the Touring Program.
I received a lot of feedback from riders and ride leaders to make improvement to routes. The construction around town and increase in traffic make this feedback very critical to help us maintain the maps and keep the routes safe. We will be reviewing the maps this fall in preparation for the next season thanks to this feedback.
As we are preparing for next season this fall, I would appreciate your feedback regarding new rides, modifications to current routes, and ideas for improvements. Some ideas floated around are more family friendly rides, and more ride options during the week.
I look forward to your feedback and the next cycling season.
Nicolas Déry, OBC Touring Program Director
