Race Report - Winter Track Nationals
Two OBC junior track riders, Nina Nesdoly and Brian Trafford, competed at the Tim Hortons Winter Nationals Track Meet weekend, February 5th to 7th 2010. Don Moxley attended this event as coach. Tim Horton’s was helping sponsor this event. Read more for Don's report.
Friday evening was a warm-up session to allow the riders to get their track legs back.
It was also an opportunity to do some work with a video camera on position and review pedal technique. Many riders have very poor pedal skills and this can negatively influence timetrial position. I was pleased to see that there are improvements being made in this area.
Temperatures in the Velodrome were around 13 degrees C which meant riders had to dress warmly. Because of the cold speeds suffered a bit. FCVA was having trouble with their heating system.
The racing started on Saturday and was in omnium format with the following four events.
- Individual Pursuit
- Flying Lap
- 500 Meters
- Scratch Race
Nina was second overall in Junior women. She moved up in the scratch race with aggressive riding.
Brian was fourth overall just off the podium. He did get a third place in the scratch race after a good effort at the end of that race.
I kept splits and we graphed their performance in the pursuit events. This is useful to establish pacing over the duration of the event. The cadet boys who were competing usually started too hard and blew up quickly during this event.
While our riders were somewhat toasted at the end, they did make some things happen in the racing they were in. The final scratch race showed who was fit who was not and the endurance of our OBC riders is good for this time of year. That gives useful feedback with designing training.

We have an excellent relationship with FCVA and an OBC jersey is treated with respect at the velodrome.
